Organization

The GSDN comprises a collaborative partnership between the Service Hub and GSDN affiliates. The goal of the GSDN is to forge relationships between the Service Hub, GSDN affiliates, and local cultural heritage organizations to help advance digitizing, managing, preserving, and publishing of unique collections -- with the intent to provide broad public access to those collections, while leveraging existing statewide and national frameworks, including Calisphere and DPLA.

Organizationally, the GSDN functions as Service Hub and "Sub-Hub" model:

  • The CDL functions as the Service Hub. Its primary roles are to 1) support the administration of the GSDN, in coordination with the GSDN Executive Committee, and 2) harvest and aggregate from GSDN affiliates, as well as individual libraries, archives, and museums in California. The aggregated collections are then made discoverable through Calisphere, a statewide portal maintained by CDL, and shared with DPLA.
  • GSDN affiliates voluntarily provide free and low-cost services to individual libraries, archives, and museums within their regional vicinity, supporting those organizations with the broader lifecycle management of their digital collections. Services may include the following: digital collections program consulting, digitization (in-house and outsourced) and digitization training, metadata creation and normalization, digital asset management/content hosting, digital content publication, and digital preservation. As of post-May 2018, the GSDN will launch with the following affiliates: Los Angeles Public Library, San Francisco Public Library, University of California Merced Library, and University of Southern California Library

As a DPLA Service Hub, the CDL serves as conduit for aggregating digital collections from service organizations (as well as individual institutions) into DPLA, via its Calisphere platform.

The CDL also convenes the GSDN (organizes meetings, maintains communications list and website, etc.), a collaborative information-sharing and referral network of organizations that provide free, cost-recovery, or grant-subsidized digital collections services to California libraries, archives, museums and other cultural heritage institutions.

GSDN partner organizations provide various services, ranging from digitization and metadata creation support, to digital asset management hosting and preservation, to training and consulting. For more information, see https://goldenstatedigitalnetwork.org/.

    Hub Ingest Details

The Service Hub's harvesting and aggregation system is based on DPLA's "ingest1" code base:  https://github.com/dpla/ingestion . Harvested records are stored in a CouchDB data store, and indexed in Solr.

    Aggregation Technology

The Calisphere public interface, built on top of the Solr index, uses Django and solrpy to query the Solr and registry APIs. It also uses Django templates to build pages, Sass to build CSS, Backbone.js to maintain and manage query state, and Jquery-pjax to manage URL history as parts of pages are updated. Collection- and institution-level data is maintained in a Django-based Collection Registry.  Our code is available on GitHub: https://github.com/ucldc/
