Lead/Key Institutions

The Michigan Service Hub is a collaborative effort by the Library of Michigan, the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS), the University of MIchigan, Wayne State University, Michigan State University, and Western Michigan University. The Library of Michigan acts as project leader, MCLS is the funding agent, and each of the universities act as a ‘sub-hub.’

The member institutions provide funds for a service hub coordinator and in-kind services for other hub activities. The university ‘sub-hubs’ maintain their own instances of Repox for metadata aggregation (with instances of Combine expected to replace them by 2019).

Services Offered

For now our focus is on aggregation, with a certain degree of metadata consultation as part of the onboarding process. Eventually we hope to provide digitization services, most likely in partnership with existing digitization centers around the state.

Completion and launch of our portal will give us a platform for the creation and hosting of curricular materials and other tools to encourage the use of aggregated collections and promote the DPLA in general.

Aggregation Technology

We have relied on Repox for metadata aggregation but are now expect our new metadata aggregator, Combine, to replace it over the next several months (fall 2108/winter 2019). Combine is an open source project (https://github.com/WSULib/combine) and we welcome feedback and suggestions from our fellow hubs on ways to improve it.

Wayne State University is currently working with the Ann Arbor development firm, Alfa Jango, to create an online portal which will be a digital heritage site similar to those supported by other states. The portal will host collection metadata and also provide curricular and other materials of particular interest to users in the state of Michigan. It is intended to complement the DPLA’s website.
